Public Engagement: Phase 1

We want to hear from you!

From May to July 2024, the study team will be engaging with the public to:

  • Introduce the I-285 Express Lanes Transit study, including the timeline and how the study will incorporate community input

  • Explain the concept of express lanes transit and why it may be beneficial

  • Gather feedback on the existing problems in the community

  • Understand where and how they use the corridor currently

  • Understand their current limitations to riding transit

Study Background

The purpose of the I-285 Express Lanes Transit study is to enhance regional connectivity and provide equitable transportation solutions that improve accessibility for individuals traveling along the I-285 corridor, leveraging the improved travel time advantages provided by the I-285 express lanes projects.

This study aims to:

Leverage GDOT’s express lanes investment

Enhance regional connectivity

Provide equitable access to transit and jobs throughout the corridor

Study Process and Next Steps

This study is early in the process. While we don’t have any solutions confirmed yet, we want your input now so we can better understand your needs and concerns to develop potential solutions. Additionally, this study is very early in the project development process. The projects that would come from this study are currently unfunded. However, this study will be designed to better understand the needs of the community and provide partners with the tools needed to be able to secure funding and identify the best way to phase any future projects.

Growing Need for Regional Connectivity

If you live, work, or drive in this corridor, you know that we have a growing community and that it can also be hard to get around and, sometimes, not even possible. The study area population is expected to increase 42% by 2050. At the same time, the number of jobs is expected to increase 33%. That means we will have an even greater need to get our growing number of residents and visitors to even more jobs!

A growing community…

…where it’s hard to get around and sometimes, not even possible.

People First Station Planning

Our station planning process along the I-285 corridor between the I-20 east and west interchanges, from H.E. Holmes to Indian Creek MARTA stations, puts people first. We're focusing on factors like proximity to essential jobs, access to major destinations, and integration into existing transportation networks to create a seamless, accessible, and efficient system that connects residents to opportunities.

We've identified five stations at existing transit hubs: H.E. Holmes, Cumberland, Perimeter Center, Doraville, and Indian Creek. These stations will serve as key connection points, making transfers between different modes of transportation easier. The remaining station locations are being strategically determined to maximize access to employment and ensure that our growing community can easily navigate the region.

Considerations for Station Planning:

Proximity to essential jobs

Access to activity centers/ major destinations

Integration into existing transportation network

We will also consider the best way for the bus to access stops as we weigh walk time, the way it connects to the regional system, and the amount of time riding in the transit vehicle.
