Study Overview

The purpose of the I-285 Express Lanes Transit study is to enhance regional connectivity and provide equitable transportation solutions that improve accessibility for individuals traveling along the I-285 corridor, leveraging the improved travel time advantages provided by the I-285 express lanes projects.

About the Projects

Study Objectives

What have we done?

The study team has been hard at work. We kicked off the study by examining the existing conditions, then we began developing the service plan alternatives, refining the preliminary service plan, and outlining infrastructure recommendations. Next, we will finalize the strategic plan. In addition to this technical work, the study team has engaged both the public and stakeholders to gather input at key study milestones.

What have we done?

What have we learned?

During December 2024, the study team held a series of public information meetings to introduce the I-285 Express Lanes Transit Study to the public. Participants were able to provide feedback in a variety of ways, including interactive activities at the public meeting and on our website, or filling out a comment form in-person or online. This feedback was used to help leverage the benefits of the express lanes, design routes that connect the region and multiple transit operations, and provide more transit options where it’s needed and to more destinations. How we used your feedback

Preliminary Service Plan

A service plan helps create optimized transit routes that increase regional connectivity and equitable access. This service plan identifies key routes and infrastructure improvements that will leverage GDOT's Express Lanes for transit. The I-285 Express Lanes Study service plan works best in an east/west model because key destinations, like Perimeter Center, are centrally located along I-285. This means travelers can efficiently transfer at these central hubs, rather than traveling the entire corridor. The east routes serve Fulton & Cobb counties, while the west routes serve DeKalb & Gwinnett counties. Travelers coming from endpoints like Indian Creek and H.E. Holmes are more likely to use MARTA rail (Blue Line) for direct access rather than traveling the entire length of I-285, making the east/west model more practical for most travelers.

How to read the map: Each line is a transit route along I-285. The stacked lines illustrate multiple routes sharing the same roadway. The lines are color-coded and labeled to differentiate routes serving the east and west.

Rider Profiles

Follow along as four Atlanta area residents — Jamie, Yoon, Shaun, and Kate — navigate how their commutes will change with the addition of I-285 Express Lanes Transit. In these examples, all four of the resident’s travel times and needed transfers are decreased, allowing their travel to be more efficient and comfortable.
